Get Your Restricted Instrument Rating R(IR) – Fly with Confidence in Low Visibility

Are you ready to take your flying to the next level? The Restricted Instrument Rating (R(IR)), formerly known in the UK as the IMC Rating, is your gateway to safer and more capable flying — even in poor weather and limited visibility.

This rating is a UK national qualification and can be added to your Part-FCL licence, giving you the flexibility and confidence to handle Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) safely and legally.

Train in a Fully Equipped Aircraft

All training is conducted in our instrument-rated PA-28 Warrior II — a dependable and well-equipped aircraft, ideal for mastering instrument flying. The aircraft is available for rental during your training, giving you both quality instruction and flexibility.

Course Requirements – What You’ll Need

To complete the Restricted Instrument Rating, you’ll need to meet the following minimums:

  • 15 hours of dual instruction in an instrument-rated aircraft.

  • Of these, at least 10 hours must be flown solely by reference to instruments.

  • 20 hours of theoretical knowledge training, which overs a range of essential IR-related subjects.

  • Theoretical knowledge exams to demonstrate your understanding.

Why Get the R(IR)?

  • Increase your flight safety margin in marginal or deteriorating weather.

  • Fly more confidently and flexibly across a wider range of conditions.

  • Add a valuable qualification to your pilot profile.
