Add a TMG Rating to Your SPL Glider Pilot Licence

Already hold your Sailplane Pilot Licence (SPL)? With a structured training course at our Approved Training Organisation, you can add a Touring Motor Glider (TMG) class rating efficiently – and in as little as 6 hours of flight instruction focused on powered flying techniques.

This is one of the most accessible and rewarding ways for glider pilots to experience powered flight while building on your existing skills.

Course Structure & Requirements

  • Flight Training

    » At least 6 hours of training on a TMG, including a minimum of 4 hours dual instruction.

  • Solo Cross‑Country

    » One solo cross-country flight of at least 80 NM, including a full-stop landing at a different aerodrome.

  • Skills Test

    » A final flight test to demonstrate handling, navigation and emergency procedures.

Theoretical Knowledge Requirements

Before your skills test, you’ll also need to show an adequate understanding of key theoretical topics, typically assessed via multiple-choice exams:

  • Principles of Flight

  • Aircraft General Knowledge

  • Operational Procedures

  • Navigation and Flight Planning

  • Air Law and Emergency Handling

Equipment, Notes & Revalidation

We provide all the materials you’ll need—official maps, rulers, protractors, flight computers, and exam books. Your TMG rating remains valid for two years and can be revalidated either by completing a proficiency check with an examiner, or by meeting recency requirements: 12 hours on TMGs (with at least 6 as pilot-in-command), 12 take-offs and landings, and 1 hour of dual instruction within the final 12 months.
