Add an SEP Class Rating to Your Licence
Thinking of upgrading your licence with an official Single Engine Piston (SEP) class rating? If you already hold a PPL(A) or LAPL(A), it’s simpler than you might expect – and here’s why it’s well worth it.
What you’ll learn:
Our course gives you the confidence to fly SEP aircraft safely under normal, abnormal, and emergency procedures. Whether you’re refreshing your skills or stepping up your training, our friendly instructors tailor the briefing to your licence and experience level.
What the UK CAA expects
Completion of a SEP training course with a certified flight school (ATO/DTO)
Passing the SEP Skill Test (proficiency check) with a UK examiner
There’s no CAA-prescribed minimum hours for SEP – but our course ensures you’ll be fully prepared.
Our course, tailored for you
For PPL(A) holders: We recommend a minimum of 2 hours dual instruction, followed by our SEP Skills Test.
For LAPL(A) holders: We suggest 3 hours dual, covering at least 10 dual take‑offs and landings, plus 10 supervised solo circuits—again, concluding with a Skills Test.
Keeping your SEP valid
SEP ratings last 24 months, after which you can:
1) Revalidate with a full proficiency check in the final 3 months; or
2) Revalidate via experience: 12 hours in SEP during the previous 12 months, including 6 hours PIC and 12 take‑offs/landings
